Winter's caresses

by Mable Chan

Winter’s caresses
December 1985 – April 1986

It was almost twenty three years ago,
In a hospital with her husband,
That a woman in pregnancy there went for a medical check up
With her husband and sister-in-law;
And she received two news-
That she contracted cervical cancer with a baby inside her womb.

Six more months to go till the child was born,
This mother was told floods of cancer treatments-
But she loved her unborn girl even more than her health-
I finally informed my doctor of my decision:
I would rather wait for a while
Until the baby was born.

Indescribable moments of waiting,
That mother went more frequently to the doctor,
To ensure one very important thing-
Not her health but her baby’s safety
And she would say to her doctor:
Say no more but save my baby.

Having fulfilled the Doctor’s Oath,
He has told this mother how severe the condition was,
And what treatment was the wisest for her,
Yet he only received false replies:
I would receive treatments for sure-
Given that my baby must not be harmed.

Four months went by in states of worries,
When the doctor finally said:
We could wait no longer,
And we must at once undergo an operation,
To take out the baby at your eighth month’s pregnancy,
While we immediately continued with the operation to treat your cancer.

This time and only this time did the mother listen to the doctor,
Who is casting all her hopes on him,
That he was about to save her child and her health,
Yet she bore the same tone in courses of unbearable pain:
Should there be any signs of danger,
Saved the baby first or nothing.

The mother’s wish came true twenty three years ago
On 18 December 1985,
That the child was born and safe,
While the mother was embraced with Smiles of Hell,
Yet she insisted it being the best decision she had ever made,
And she softly, soothingly, and serenely rested in the winter’s caresses.
